Time series analysis of water surface of Chimkurgan reservoir in Kshkadarya river basin using remote sensing information

Abstract

The study aims to understand time series change of water surface of the Chimkurgan reservoir in Kashkadarya river basin. This helps to monitor available water resources and its changes over the past period for better management of existing resources and better planning which plays an important role for irrigated agriculture, people’s livelihood and ecosystem services. The surface area in the last five years have changed differently, which is showing in some years there was water shortages that lead to almost dry the reservoirs. This relates to climate variability and its change due to global warming with high temperature and less precipitation. Frequency of intense of air temperature and precipitation changes and their variability is expected to be negatively impacted water resources and on crop production (Reyer, C. et al). The data for this purpose was obtained from remote sensing, particularly from Sentinel data which provides freely available high-resolution images of the earth. The remote sensing images were prepared for 5 different years and from these images water surface was delineated using widely used supervised classification methodology where different objects on the earth is categorized into appropriate classes. Based on the classified images, it is possible to carry out change analysis of the reservoir starting from 2017 to 2021 over the last five years. The results of this study show how the Chimkurgan reservoir surface have changed during different time periods. Overall, for the last five-year period between 2017 and 2021 the reservoir surface water area changed differently. The results of this study maybe a great use to decision makers or scientists who deal with water management and future planning if available water resources
